Building a First-rate Educational Think Tank Running an Excellent Local School

  On the afternoon of May 20, Shenzhen’s first county-level Science Research Institute was officially established by the Institute of Science Education in Futian District. The original Zulin Primary School changed its name to the Futian District Primary Institute of Science.

  The Futian District Institute of Science Education can now better assume the responsibilities of a new think tank for innovating theory that can assist decision-making and guide public opinion to boost education in Futian district. It can also fully integrate with the Futian District Primary Institute of Science to help the it become a leading school characterized by high performance and excellent quality that’s respected in the area.

  At 2.30 pm, the opening ceremony was held in the ladder classroom at the Futian District Primary Institute of Science. Attendees included leaders at the municipal and district levels, principal representatives from primary and secondary schools, members of the Institute of Education Science, school teachers, parent representatives, student representatives, and media representatives.

  Fan Kun, Deputy Director of Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, gave a keynote speech. He remarked that Futian district’s efforts at building the first demo school for district-level scientific research in Shenzhen is a major event for educational development in Futian district. It will enhance innovation and research in the district and promote deep reforms. He said that it’s gratifying that Futian district’s Futian District Primary Institute of Science was formally opened as one school under one institute to integrate research and practice. This acheivement is not only conducive to bringing into play the Institute’s research achievements, but also boosts teachers’ professional level and schools’ quality.

  At the seminar themed New Normal, New Teaching and Research, and New Heights, Tian Hongming, Director of Futian District Education Bureau, proposed the concepts of “research, leading, innovation, and service” to teaching and research staff. He encouraged principals to establish and gradually realize the lofty educational ideas from the four aspects of “world vision, future standards, local practice, and continuous progress”. Tian encouraged teachers and researchers to create a “new normal” for teaching and research and to go to the frontlines and bring changes wherever they go. This will help them effectively play a role in innovative research and guidance.

  Yao Xiaoying, Principal of the Institute of Education Science-Affiliated Primary School, pointed out that with the support of the institute, the school could “spread its roots and dream big”. It could break previous teaching patterns; boldly reform curricula; develop four curricula systems for moral conduct, discipline knowledge, diverse intelligence, and a colorful childhood; and cultivate ambitious, healthy, and young students of good character and comprehensive abilities.

  Zulin Primary School has 33 years of history, and currently has about 900 students in 20 classes. It has high-quality teaching staff and a solid organizational structure. Renaming it the Institute of Futian District Primary Institute of Science is an important move in the 13th Five-year Development Plan for “educational balance” made by Futian district’s education system.
